An incredible piece of natural home-building

We just discovered this beautiful home, or what was once home, in the beech hedging, and it is so incredibly intricate, so beautiful and fragile, that I had to photograph it and share it with you. It measures about twelve inches from top to bottom, probably fifteen around at the widest point. Empty now of course, and since wasps never return to the nest, we have taken it down and been able to look at it closely inside. Amazing the amount of work, effort that has gone into it, for just temporary accommodation.

I once found a huge wasps nest in our loft; thankfully they had gone too.

How beautifully crafted and what industry must have gone into making that little palace. Isn't Nature wonderful?

Though they dismay most people throughout the summer months, wasps must have an exceptionally creative talent to make such an elaborate and exquisite home for themselves. I did have one of these some years ago - it was taken from the loft of the house we lived in at the time. I remember, like you, being fascinated by the structure. We cannot begin to out-perform Nature, can we?
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment about Holidaying at home and I really enjoyed reading about your experiences of this. I love your box of ideas - we'll definitely take up that idea. I don't remember ever being as excited about any holiday as we are about this one! It just goes to show, 'there's no place like home' is there? Thank you dear Pink Fairy Gran - I'm really touched by your generosity in sharing your experiences of 'staying home' or as a friend told me today - it is now called "staycation" - that's media speak!
What did you think of "How to be Idle"? I really like it - found it a few years back when i first gave up my full-time job, and it felt like a much needed read at the time. I still dip into it now.
Anyway, I should be off - I have a holiday to prepare for!!!!

A wasp nest is indeed a wonderous thing, all that work for just one season. I do prefer them empty though, we came across onr in the hedge when we were cutting it, the inhabitants were not best pleased. We also discovered a vacated one near the back door when the leaves came off the clematis, so close yet they never bothered us at all.

I am glad oyu enjoyed yourself at the convention. I am sorry your Bavarians was handled so roughly their first time on a table. However as a side joke of the story when the unit was rode down they where placed by the registration table. There was at least ten people that asked if they where for sale after that. The Bavarians really look nice.
